My previous academic training includes a BA from McGill University, a Master's degree from Harvard University, and a Ph.D. from Syracuse University. In 2004, I followed my longstanding interests in health and attended the New Hampshire Institute for Therapeutic Arts.
Continuing Education. . .
Following my
licensure as a massage therapist, my primary area of continued study
has focused on acute and chronic pain, sports massage, and oncology
massage. To date, I have completed 500 hours of advanced training, as follows:
Neuromuscular Therapy (American Version): In 2009, I became certified as a Neuromuscular Therapist through the Neuromuscular Center of Florida. NMT is effective for treating chronic and acute muscular strain/pain syndromes. NMT treatments allow the therapist to focus on specific muscles that create and/or sustain pain cycles. Orthopedic Massage: From 2007 - 2008, I studied orthopedic massage through Whitney Lowe's Orthopedic Massage Education & Research Institute. Lowe is a nationally recognized expert and author. His training focuses on clinical decision-making and assessment skills along with matching the physiology of injury to correct treatment approaches. I completed the Orthopedic Massage Specialist certification requirements in 2008. Prior to this, I studied orthopedic pain management with James Waslaski, national trainer and owner of the Center for Pain Management in Texas. Sports and Myofascial Massage: My sports techniques are based on the CORE Institute's sports massage and myofascial therapy training, where I received certification in Advanced Sports Massage and training in "CORE Myofascial Therapy" in 2007. I have also studied myofascial and clinical techniques with Bob King, national trainer, author, and founder of the Chicago School of Massage.
Active Isolated Stretching: The Mattes Method of stretching (AIS) can be incorporated within a massage or can be a stand-alone treatment. AIS is based on physiological principles, such as "reciprocal inhibition," and helps to lengthen muscles and relieve adhesions within the fascia that inhibit free range of motion. Stretches require active participation of the client and are designed to engage specific portions of each muscle.
Deep Massage: I was introduced by David Lauterstein (co-founder of the Lauterstein- Conway School of Massage in Texas) to "Deep Massage," an approach that works with structure and energy simultaneously to promote health of body, mind, and spirit. I have also completed the first level of Reiki training. Oncology Massage: I was fortunate to study with Tracy Walton, one of the pioneers in the field of oncology massage, prior to working with people who are being treated for cancer. I was a member of the Mercy Hospital Oncology Massage team from 2006 - 2009. Intra-oral techniques: My studies of temporomandibular dysfunction include continuing education offered by UNH; study with Tom Myers (author of Anatomy Trains and founder of KMI, a school of structural integration); and training offered by the Neuromuscular Center of Florida.
Kinesiotaping: I have been trained in the therapeutic use of kinesiotape, which can be used to complement/prolong the effects of soft tissue treatment.
Natural Facelift Massage: I am a certified facelift massage professional. Facelift massage helps to relax facial muscles and rejuvenate facial skin. This technique has been effective for clients who have sinus issues, facial strain, and/or jaw pain. This treatment also helps to promote deep relaxation.
